Dental Health Risks from Lead-Based Crowns

Monday, March 31st, 2008

You may have heard about the massive recall of toys by Mattel last year. This was due to toxic lead found in the paint of many toy items. These toys were manufactured and imported from China.

Similar issues have been found with dental crowns manufactured in China. Several patients that became ill after dental work had their illness traced to high levels of lead entering the bloodstream after having these crowns placed.

It is your right to insist that your dentist uses standard high-quality crowns and other dental items from the most reputable suppliers.

A good dentist is well aware of these issues and is very careful to select suppliers. Your dentist will not take offense to such a question. Your doctor is there to enhance and protect your health by using the most advanced techniques. He will also use the highest quality supplies available.

Lead is linked to Parkinson’s disease. Lead poisoning could also lead to irritability, muscle weakness, learning problems and (this is ironic) higher rates of tooth decay! these are just a few of the symptoms.

Lead may be fine for certain industrial items. It has no place in a person’s mouth!

New Holistic Viewpoint of Dental Health

Friday, March 28th, 2008

I read a fabulous post today. It’s from a doctor who makes a wise comment regarding the overall health of the body. She says that the state of our oral health reflects the overall state of our body. It’s quite brilliant and will get you thinking about your own overall health. When you look at the condition of your mouth, you will get a reflection of what’s going on physically, mentally and spiritually.

Detecting what is wrong within; addressing the issues and healing them will enhance the overall health of the body.

The holistic approach is one of great wisdom. Everything is connected. The systems of the body need to operate smoothly and efficiently. If one part of the body is in trouble, it will reflect in the performance and general health of the rest of our body. Conversely, as we strengthen and heal each individual part of us that is in sub-health, it will reflect in a greater overall health.

Let’s get a simple example. Let’s say you have a toothache, how will you feel going through your day today? How will you face some annoyance that is normally a brush-off? Of course, that small annoyance will be greatly magnified. The physical pain decreases our mental and spiritual health to some degree.

Stress: Oh that wonderful popular word of our times!

Stress is directly linked to the breakdown of oral (and overall) health. During the time that I had a sudden deterioration of my gums leading to periodontitis, I was dealing with an enourmous amount of stress due to family issues. The fact was impossible to deny. Stress is a killer. With mounting economic pressures and world issues, it is important to protect ourselves from the negativity that we are bombarded with in our day to day existence.

Exercise and meditation are a great buffer for stress. Finding solace in your respective religious practice will help relieve stress and illness within the body.

Take time to laugh. No matter what is going on, grab some time away from the daily routine and laugh. What movie always made you laugh? Get a copy and watch it. What comedian do you enjoy? Pick up their CD or find downloads on the web. So many of these treasures are available today for free. I always loved Rodney Dangerfield and Sam Kinison. Both men are gone but never forgotten. whenever I want my sides to split, they fill the order.

Have GRATITUDE: No matter what is going on in our life, there is much to be grateful for. I’ve read several books by Dr. Joe Vitale (highly recommended). At one point in his life, Joe was homeless, negative and leading a miserable existence. This all changed when he started finding things to be grateful for. He started, I believe, with a pencil in his pocket. He thanked “the universe” for the pencil and started to roll-out all the things that he could be grateful for. His life changed. He is a best-selling author and millionaire today. Gratitude was the beginning of such a dramatic change in his life. Gratitude, by the way, is a constant attitude. Be grateful always!

An exercise in Gratitude:

I did this, it works. I frequently repeat the process- highly recommended:

Lie on your back, relax and then think of one thing that you can be grateful for. I gave thanks for the clean room that I was in, my comfortable bed, having a roof over my head and a refrigerator full of food. After that, the floodgates opened. You soon find that there are thousands and thousands of “free” gifts in life to be thankful for! How about your senses, or the fact that blood is flowing through your veins bringing life by a heart that will beat continuously until our final day? Pretty amazing, right?

Gratitude is an amazing “strategy” for changing life for the better.

Dental Health Expense Tips

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Dental expense can be overwhelming. Cavities, root canal, gum disease and other advanced dental problems demand treatment that can seriously affect one’s financial health. Without a good (and expensive) insurance plan, most people are forced to neglect this vital care.

If you find yourself in this position, here are a few tips that can help:

Ask your dentist to prioritize treatment. In this way , you can space-out treatment appointments. Take care of the most urgent issues first. In between treatment you can seek other options to fund or offset the overall cost.

Discuss some options to your treatment plan. Your dentist may find other ways to treat the same issues which could be less expensive. Being ‘creative’ in this way does not have to compromise proper treatment.

Many dentists will work out a finance plan for you. If your dentist has been your doctor for some time, this could be a good option.

Of course, we always need to examine our eating and general health habits. What has caused the cavities, the gum disease and other problems? Poor eating habits with junk food, soda and other sweets will cause extensive damage over time. Altering diet to make more healthy selections will not only preserve the teeth but our overall health.

Exercise is not only good for the muscles and cardiovascular system. Blood flow from exercise also helps to maintain healthy gums. Healthy gums enhance the teeth which creates a better resistance to harmful bacteria. Exercise does a great deal to enhance the immune system. All the systems of the body work together. Work the holistic approach.

Use a soft toothbrush and don’t brush hard. If not, the enamel breaks down over time and this leads to complications.

Use natural products for brushing and maintenance.

Dental Health: Gum Disease & Clots

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Gum disease infection and openings put the entire body at risk.  If the infection enters the bloodstream,  there’s a  tendency for  serious health challenges to develop.

Bacteria that enters the bloodstream contacting a weakened area within any major artery can lead to clotting. Clotting is a natural healing response. However, a clot within the major arteries of the heart can lead to a heart attack. Clotting near the brain can lead to a stroke.

This article gives a complete overview of clotting. It explains what a clot is and  the many issues that can seriously affect your quality of life. Of course, a heart attack or stroke can also be fatal.

Our job is  prevention. Daily cleaning is imperative. We should observe for any cavities or gum disintegration at least twice a week. A 6 month check-up will reveal the issues that only an expert can find. A dentist can then correct the issue before it becomes a  more serious health challenge.

Knowledge is not only available but free for all these concerns on the internet. Any issue can be researched by simply typing the word into your search browser. The many articles written by doctors and health experts can very well save your life. Use this gift freely and often.

Here’s a link to your “bad breath bible”. There’s so much more information than just getting rid of bad breath in the report. It’s yours with a simple click of the mouse.

Dental Health: More Info on Fluoride

Monday, March 24th, 2008

I’d like to share with you this article that gives another slant on the fluoride controversy.

Although fluoride is still used and widely promoted in most tooth paste products, the general opinion by experts is that it is a useless and harmful substance. The only ‘fans’ of fluoride seem to have a commercial interest in using this substance. The general consensus is growing to eventually eliminate fluoride as an additive to dental health products. The momentum is picking up steadily.

I’m not knocking anybody. However, facts are facts. There is so much evidence to prove that this substance formed from  fluorine really does very little to enhance dental health. To jump on the fluoride bandwagon with no real proof of it’s effectiveness is a bit irresponsible. At very least, the use of fluoride as an additive should be earnestly reconsidered.

The best idea is to be natural. Find what food substances actually do enhance dental health and stay with that. One thing is for sure, it is certainly more economical to use natural substances to maintain our dental (and all) health wherever possible.

If you can, take time to check out that article.

Here is the link to your “Bad Breath Bible”

OraMD is, by far, my natural brushing dentifrice of choice.  Some may claim that it’s “expensive”. However, when it only takes 3-4 drops a day to maintain glowing dental health, I would dare say that it’s quite a bargain. Very few other commercially available toothpaste or mouthwash products can claim to not only prevent Gingivitis & Periodontitis but can actually revert the symptoms and fully heal the gums. This has certainly been the result for me.

No fluoride, no chemicals, no crap; just the most potent natural oils to eliminate bad breath along with tooth and gum degeneration.

Dental Health with Chocolate!

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Yes, you heard right. There’s a certain anti-bacterial property found in chocolate that prevents tooth decay.

To be exact, it is the antibacterial properties found in the husk of the cocoa bean that fights plaque and other bacteria. This part of the bean is normally discarded in the production of chocolate. Properly extracted, the husk can be utilized for bacteria fighting prevention; either with chocolate or other food based products.

As discussed in a previous post, plaque is the culprit to the onset of gingivitis and periodontitis.

It’s also been found that this quality generally makes chocolate less damaging as a confection compared to other sweets. Even if we eat standard milk or dark chocolate (and who doesn’t), the antibacterial properties in the chocolate offset the potential damage of the sugar. It’s a great thing to know and use when justifying a chocolate binge. I’m certainly going to use that excuse the next time!

OK, I’m getting carried away. However, there has been earnest research at Osaka University in Japan since 2000 to find how vital these anti-bacterial properties are. The Cocoa Bean Husk (called CBH) has been used in several experiments with rats. It was added to their water. The same rats had water with high sugar added. After the CBH was added, the rats had a much lower tendency to cavities. This was a test conducted over a 3-month period.

It has been suggested from this research that new products can be developed using CBH for tooth decay prevention. First off, toothpaste and mouthwash with CBH added is becoming a strong possibility.

Also, CBH added back to standard chocolate products will create a better chance of preventing cavities while indulging in chocolate as we know and love it daily. SWEEEEEET! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist).

Dental Health & Diabetes

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I read an article today that had me a bit alarmed. Especially since I had a long , personal fight with Gingivitis and Periodontitis. In fact, those dental issues are the very reason that this blog exists. Writing about it and blogging my own results have been very helpful in my own research. I’ve learned how to get the condition fully under control. Hopefully, it’s been helpful and a source of inspiration  to you too.

There is a strong connection between Periodontitis and Diabetes. It goes like this: Diabetes is a culprit to be detected if you have a condition of Periodontitis and , conversely,  Periodontitis is a sign of Diabetes.

Additionally, if you get one of the afflictions under control, the other will come other control.  They’re sort of like “bookends”. One is a symptom of the other. They feed off one another.

If you had an onset of Gingivitis and/or Periodontitis, a full check up for Diabetes is necessary. This is just as important as getting to the dentist.

It is equally important to get the items to combat the conditions. OraMD has been my “ace in the deck” for keeping my periodontitis under control.

Most early diabetes can be either reversed or brought dramatically under control with a good healthy diet. Only a doctor who specializes in the condition can aptly develop a program for you.

Good luck to you if you have these symptoms. Don’t be afraid, be conscientious and get help.

Oh yes, don’t forget to get your free”bad breath bible”. The report covers so much more than bad breath.

Pregnancy Dental Health Tips

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Many women fall into a compromised state of dental health during pregnancy.

Hormones released during pregnancy along with increased blood flow can cause the gums to become inflamed. This inflamation leads to Gingivitis and Periodontitis.

Pregnancy is also a time when the bacteria that causes plaque has the opportunity to increase dramatically.

Much of a mother’s intake of nutrients are used to ensure the proper growth of the fetus. This stress on the mother’s system is enormous. This added demand can deplete a woman’s natural immune defenses too. It is important for a pregnant woman to eat the most nutritious food for her own health as well as the health of the baby.

Prenatal health care should include a complete regimen of dental care too. Here are some points. This can be copied and pasted to your notepad or word document and printed out. Post this  in an area where  you can check it off daily during the 9 months of pregnancy.

  1.    Have your dentist check your teeth frequently during the 9 months of pregnancy in order to detect and provide treatment for any dental health issue that may arrive. Professional  Cleaning is essential in order to remove plaque build up. It’s the plaque build up that leads to Gingivitis and Periodontitis.
  2. Eat only nutritious food. Avoid sugar, caffeine and foods with empty calories. Remember, whatever a mother is eating during pregnancy, a child is also ingesting.
  3. Vitamin C and Calcium are needed during pregnancy. Be sure to keep these added nutrients in good supply. If your health plan includes nutritional counseling, by all means take full advantage of it.
  4. Craving is normal. It’s nature’s way of telling you to “eat for two”. Munch on fresh fruit, vegetables and other health foods such as yogurt and nuts. Eating well creates good saliva.  This saliva will counteract the bad bacteria and the build up of such germs.
  5. Clean the entire mouth with: tongue scraping (described in the previous post).
  6. Flossing: using ReachAccess is a great and easy way to accomplish this. My own dentist recommended this product to me very highly. Most people never floss properly. This product easily solves that problem.
  7. Get your free “Bad Breath Bible”. When you access the page to order your bible, look at the starter kits available. You can choose a kit that fits and addresses your exact  challenges. It’s also very affordable.
  8. Brush your teeth and use OraMD to thoroughly clean the gumline. Add a few drops to your tongue. This product kills 22 of the most invasive germs that cause Gingivitis, Periodontitis & Bad Breath.

Pregnancy should be a time of great joy and anticipation. It is perhaps the greatest miracle of life. Self care and respect for the mother and growing child is a joyous duty.
